Ali Modu Sheriff (born 1956) is a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Borno State from 2003 to 2011. He was the first governor to serve two consecutive terms.

 

FAMILY

Sheriff was born 1956 to the prominent Borno business tycoon Galadima Modu Sheriff and  Aisha Modu Sheriff of Ngala Town, Ngala Local Government Area, Borno State.

 

 

Sheriff is married to Halti Ali Modu Sheriff. Together they have children including Mustapha Sheriff and Halima Modu Sheriff.

 

 

EDUCATION

Sheriff attended Government Secondary School, Bama from 1974 to 1979). He attended the London School of Business, where he studied Insurance, Banking and Finance.

 

CAREER

In 1981, Sheriff joined his father’s construction company as a Director, and later Managing Director.

 

In 1985, he registered his first company. His companies include Meroil Organisation and Union Chase.

He was elected as a senator from Borno during the Third Nigerian Republic under the banner of NRC, his opponent then was Kolo Kingibe, wife of the SDP chairman, Babagana Kingibe.

 

He was also a member of the Constitutional Conference and chaired the committee on states and local government.

 

 

In April 1999, after democracy was restored, he was elected Senator for a second time on the platform of the All Nigeria People’s Party, or ANPP.

 

He ran for Governor of Borno on the ANPP platform in 2003 and won. He was re-elected in 2007.

When he again became Senator for Borno North in 1999, he helped Mala Kachalla become Governor on the ticket of the ANNP.

 

 

The agreement was that Kachalla would stand down after one term to make space for Sheriff. Politicians and Boko Haram members say Sheriff then made a deal with Mohammed Yusuf, an early leader of Boko Haram.

 

If Yusuf provided the support of Boko Haram youth, Sheriff would see to full implementation of Sharia, or Islamic law.

In January 2014 a group of Borno State elites calling themselves Borno Elites for Peace, Stability and Progress called for Sheriff’s arrest, claiming he had created terror cells in the state and was connected to a bomb blast that killed about 30 people. No arrest has been made.

On December 2014, DSS Cleared Ihejirika And Modu Sheriff on the alleged Boko haram involvement. In 2018, he defected to the All Progressive Congress.
