‘I survived civil war, cholera’ – Magnus Abe pens uplifting message on birthday

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the last gubernatorial election in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Abe, has taken to social media to narrate how he triumphed over difficulty situations in life.
Abe, in a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday to mark his birthday, called on Nigerians not to give up as no problem lasts forever.
He wrote: “Yesterday marked another complete circle in my Journey. Life is indeed a rare gift and a special privilege.
As I reflect on the twists and turns that have characterised my journey I am genuinely grateful and thankful to Almighty God.
First is the gift of life itself, anyone of the past 21,000 plus days could have been my last. But here I am, still counting and still kicking. Iwas born in 1965, I survived the civil war as a child, millions of children starved to death, I beat the odds for no apparent reason.
After the war there was an out break of cholera, small pox etc, I survived, and grew to adulthood. Millions of other children born at the same time did not.
I had the privilege of western education, others did not, I trained as a lawyer, my passion for life and my conviction that in a competitive world the black man can do better led me into the Politics of Nigeria.
I remain humbled and grateful to the people, particularly in Rivers state who bought into our dream.
We remain convinced that with some effort and sacrifice we can create a better life for ourselves and our children in our country and in our lifetime.
Sceptics and naysayers called us names but the people believed in our vision and gave it life.
Over the years I have grown wiser, more practical, I have learnt the lessons of life.
Nothing beats experience, anything that does not kill you will only make you stronger.
Follow your dreams without fear, try new ways without guilt, if you fall get up and keep going, it is only God that can decide the end, as long as you can get up and walk outside and see the Sun it is not over.
For there is nothing new under the Sun, Nothing will happen today that has not happened before.
Time will heal every broken heart.
The most important thing is life and health, every thing else will come and go.
I am grateful to all those who contributed to my life, those who helped me when I was down, encouraged me when all seemed lost, those who believed in our dreams.
I am sincerely grateful to you all. The future indeed is bright, the road ahead may be bumpy and uncertain, but the journey is the destination we must enjoy and celebrate our shared humanity.
I want to thank my adversaries, all those who opposed me and challenged me, you helped to bring out the best in me, but for you my strengths will not come to the fore.
Most importantly, I want to thank my friends and associates, those who showed me good faith and stood with me in good times and in bad, it has been a rollercoaster ride, not a dull moment to fret and worry.
We have attempted great things together and we will continue to pursue our dreams. A better tomorrow is possible, as long as we draw breath.
Finally I thank my wife and family, you do not get to choose your family but you get to choose your wife, I am grateful to God for the rare gift I found as a partner and a friend.
For all those who took out time and scarce resources to celebrate me on my birthday I say thank you, may your own well never run dry, may blessings never cease in your life, may your days be long.
Words alone cannot express my gratitude. Your sacrifice of love and friendship will yield untold blessings for you and your family. That is my prayer and my desire for you all.
Thank you and thank you again.”
