The murder of Gafaru Buraimoh, a resident of Happy Land estate, has sparked protests in the Ajah axis of Lagos state.
Buraimoh, a man in his 30s, was said to have been hit by a stray bullet around 10pm on Tuesday in Ajah.
Police officers attached to Ajiwe station in the area were said to have conducted a raid to arrest traders who sell black market petrol.
The officers were said to have fired shots while on the raid, during which Buraimoh was killed.
On Wednesday morning, residents besieged the police station and other major roads in the area to protest the murder.
Reacting to the incident, Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos police spokesperson, said the inspector involved in the shooting has been disarmed, arrested and detained.
Hundeyin assured the deceased’s family that justice will be served.
“At about 2330 hrs of Tuesday, December 06 2022, a shooting incident involving men of Ajah Division, resulted in the unfortunate death of Gafaru Buraimoh of Happy Land Estate, Ajah,” the police spokesperson said.
“The officer behind the shooting, an inspector of police, was immediately disarmed and has been detained, as a full-scale investigation has commenced.
“The Lagos State Police Command through the area commander, Elemoro and divisional police officer, Ajah has since notified and established contact with the family.
“The command, while commiserating with the family of the deceased over the avoidable and most unfortunate incident, gives assurances that the already commenced investigation into the immediate and remote circumstances leading to the shooting will be brought to a speedy and conclusive end, while equally ensuring that justice is served.”
