The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has named Omosede Igbinedion, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Marcus Onobun, Jimoh Ijegbai and a former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Kabiru Adjoto among others as candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party for the House of Representatives in various constituencies for next year’s general elections.

The new list of candidates approved by INEC belongs to the PDP faction loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Before now, INEC had published candidates from the faction loyal to Dan Orbih, the national vice chairman of the party and a strong ally of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State,

According to a report by Vanguard, senatorial candidates on the updated list in the website of INEC also have Matthew Iduoriyekemwen for Edo South, Senator Clifford Ordia for Edo Central and Senator Francis Alimikhena for Edo North.

A source within the electoral body said the body does not want to dabble into internal politics of the Edo PDP and said the names as published as regards candidate of the Edo PDP were based on a recent court order.

Head of Voter Education and Publicity of INEC in Edo State, Mr. Timidi Wariowei, who confirmed the updated version of the list of PDP’s candidates in Edo said the change was effected on INEC’s website, based on court order.

PlatinumPost reports that delegates from congresses organised by the Orbih’s legacy faction of the party took part in the national convention that produced the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, even as there is an ongoing case in the Court of Appeal in Benin to determine the faction that produced authentic candidates ahead of the 2023 general elections.
