A roadblock set up by military personnel at Ochadamu on the popular Lokoja-Anyigba/Itobe Highway in the Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi has caused a fatal accident that claimed many lives.
According to SaharaReporters, over 20 vehicles were also reportedly burnt in the accident.
It was learnt that the accident happened around 3 p.m. on Thursday after a disagreement between the military men and petrol tanker drivers.
According to an eyewitness, the soldiers allegedly shot two tanker drivers and this made the colleagues of the victims angry.
They subsequently barricaded the highway with a tanker loaded with fuel.
A few moments later, a speeding truck ran into the petrol tanker causing it to explode.
This caused an inferno that killed many people and burnt over 20 vehicles.
An eyewitness who spoke to SaharaReporters said though the incident occurred around 3 p.m, the fire was still raging at the time he was making a video of it around 5 p.m.
“Nobody has come to try anything even to clear the road,” he said with a note of frustration.
Reacting to the incident, The Federal Road Safety Corps said their personnel visited the scene of the accident but could not tell the total number of casualties.
Meanwhile, a text message sent to the state police public relation officer, Ruth Awi, seeking more details on the incident was yet to be replied to as of the time of filing this report.
