An International Non-Governmental Organisation, Education Network Against COVID-19 has trained over three thousand repentant commercial sex workers, widows and orphans in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Executive Director of the Organization, Dr. Ben Onwudinjo made this known while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Formal Launching of the National Post COVID 19 Educational Response Plan For Citizens Affected by the COVID 19 Pandemic especially Widows, Orphans Repented Commercial Sex Workers and Youth Groups in Nigeria.
Dr. Onwudinjo said the beneficiaries which were selected from the six Area Councils in the FCT were those whose fortunes and possibilities of acquiring decent educationi may have been affected by the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic.
“On behalf of the Presidency, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha who doubled as the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID 19 endorsed that our NGO awards tuition scholarship to vulnerable women and youths who obviously were affected by the COVID 19 pandemic at no cost to Government and Education Network Against COVID 19 is expected to raise funding from foreign and local philanthropist and sources” He stated
According to him, with the support from members of the University of Nigeria Alumni Association, the beneficiaries were trained on different skills acquisition which include catering, craft, cosmetology, tailoring, driving, mechanics, computer coding/programming, solar power energy/CCTV installation and fashion/interior decoration practical lectures.
Dr. Onwudinjo explained that the Organization also prepared them for to sit for Nov./Dec. 2022 West African Examinations Council, WAEC and NABTEB exams and paid their tuition and examination fees.
“To register the remaining 2,900 candidates for the WAEC 2023 Jan/Feb exam, we need Pu support to the tune of Fifty-two Million, Two Hundred Thousand Naira since WAEC charges Eighteen Thousand Naira per candidate” the Executive Director stressed
He therefore solicited the support of International communities, NGOs, Faith Based Organisations, Philanthropists, International NGOs, and well meaning Nigerians for the payment of WAEC fees of the beneficiaries before the end of this year.
Dr. Onwudinjo stated that the training programme which would also be carried out in the 36 States of the Federation would equally be extended to victims of domestic violence and youth groups.
The Executive Director commended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, Ministers of Education, that of Finance, Budget and National Planning as well as Minister of State for FCT for their support and collaboration on the training.
“We require educational facilities across the States to enable us train all interested vulnerable groups and register them for WAEC/NECO/NABTEB at no cost to them and to the State Governments since funding comes from our incomes, crowd funding and support from local and International sources as we await State Government”s invitation for our actions, ” he added.
