AFCON CAF names controversial referee for Nigeria Vs Tunisia match

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named alleged controversial Senegalese referee Maguette N’Diaye for Sunday’s Round of 16 clash between Nigeria and Tunisia at the ongoing AFCON 2021 in Cameroon.

Maguette was allegedly dubious in his handling and subsequent awarding of a penalty during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Ghana and South Africa.

The long list of controversial decisions from that encounter then resulted in SAFA lodging a complaint with FIFA pressing for a replay of the match on grounds that it had been manipulated, but was later discarded by world’s football governing body.

Interestingly, Maguette is among six candidate referees from Africa tipped to handle this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

According to his profile, Maguette is a seasoned referee who regularly handles continental club matches in the Champions League, Confederation Cup and oversaw 2020 CAF Super Cup.

He also handled 10 international matches last year.

Sunday’s encounter is slated for Roumdé Adjia Stadium, Garoua and is expected to kick-off by 8:00pm Nigerian time.
