Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party may have endorsed the northern consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman, Senator Iyiochia Ayu and the consensus candidate of the South East, for the position of National Secretary, Sen. Sam Anyanwu.
This followed a closed-door meeting with the two candidates in Abuja on Wednesday.
Although details of the closed-door meeting were sketchy as of the time of filing this report, it was gathered that the governors interacted with the two on their plans for the party, should they eventually scale through during the convention.
A party source privy to what transpired said, “The meeting was basically to sound them out on expectations as well as their plans for the party.
“You can call it an endorsement because the governors who are their main sponsors were at the meeting and none of the other aspirants were invited.”
It was learnt that Anyanwu enjoys the backing of Governors Okezie Ikpeazu and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Abia and Enugu state respectively.
While his main challenger, Okey Muo-Aroh, insists on contesting, another contestant, the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum, CID Maduabum has withdrawn.
It was learnt that governors prevailed on Maduabum to withdraw. A source privy to the development said, “Maduabum was advised by his principals to withdraw in order to allow Anyanwu enjoy a smooth ride.”
However, the chairman of the PDP-GF, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, refuted claims that the meeting was one of endorsement.
He told reporters after the meeting, ” They (Ayu and Anyanwu) came for a private discussion with one or two governors. They had their private discussions and left.”
Tambuwal also said preparations towards a successful conduct of the October 31 convention had reached an advanced stage.
He said, “We have just finished our meeting where we received briefings from the convention planning/organising committee, the Governor of Adamawa state, Ahmadu Fintiri, that we are on course and by the grace of God, they have almost concluded every arrangement and plan for a very successful, free and fair convention for the PDP coming up on the 30th and 31st of this month.”
He expressed confidence that the party would come out of the event stronger and united.
Those at the meeting include: Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Duoye Diri (Bayelsa), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Ahmed Fintiri (Adamawa) Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi).
Governors Darius Ishaku and Samuel Ortom of Taraba and Benue states respectively sent representatives.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Screening Committee for the convention, Mohammed Adoke, (SAN), at the commencement of the screening of aspirants said, “The screening process for the election of the National officers of our party marks the beginning of our collective efforts to once more bestow credible and effective leadership for the country at all levels. We cannot afford to fail.”
