Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, says the decision of most National Assembly members to vote in support of direct party primaries was prompted by the exclusion of their loyalists from executive positions by governors.
Sani, who recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was elected as a senator under the platform of the All Progressives Congress in 2015.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, the rights activist said some of the lawmakers strongly opposed direct primaries that was canvassed in the eight National Assembly.
He said : “Most of the lawmakers supported and benefited from the indirect primaries in 2019; they attacked us for recommending direct primaries and sided with the Governors. Now that thesame Governors have excluded their supporters in the constitution of the party Excos, they have converted to pro direct primaries. It’s what’s goes round that comes around, ”
PlatinumPost reports that the Senate had recently voted in support of direct primaries in the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act.
The PDP has also criticised the decision, saying it would make the cost of conducting primaries to skyrocket as every party member has to be involved in such exercise.
