The former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kawu Baraje have offered an insight on the zoning arrangement of the main opposition party.
He said that PDP didn’t zone it’s presidential ticket to any particular region.
Baraje who was Speaking an Arise TV program ‘Newsday’ further explained that the PDP will not also zone the position of of the president.
PlatinumPost reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kano State governor, Musa Kwankwaso, Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, among others, are said to be candidates from the North eyeing the party’s 2023 presidential ticket.
But political analysts say the zoning of the party’s chairmanship seat to the North, automatically shifted the PDP presidential ticket to the South.
Baraje, however, picked holes on such argument.
“If the chairman comes from the North it does not stop any candidate from the North from contesting for the position of the president as long as it is in line with the conclusion of the NEC of my party, in line with the agreement of my party. I am speaking in support of the position of my party of which all of us agreed to.
“My opinion is not different from what has been the craving of the public, the electorate and that is electronic transmission. We are ready for it, Nigerian is ready for it, our electorates are ready for it and it is one of the clearest way of introducing checks and balances into a corrupt system of election. We have been saying that we need an electoral system that is transparent, that is corrupt free and an election that is credible that anyone can stand and speak for.
He said, “The beginning of causing confusion during election is the beginning of rigging the election, I will there fore strongly support the position of my party.
“The electronic transmission is one of the main effective ways that we can use to eliminate corruption, to eliminate fraud, and to eliminate double standards in our elections.
“I strongly recommend that we go for electronic transmission and I don’t know why we should be afraid of it, if we mean well for our country, if we mean well for our electoral processes, if we mean well that we want to deliver clean and credible elections then we shouldn’t be afraid of electronic transmission.
“The legislative arm of government to me have not be delivering to the expectations of the people, especially those of us outside the rim of affairs there.
“The last NEC meeting we had we looked at the statement on ground, the zoning committee of my party which I am a member, recommended of the position that anyone from the North should go to the South and those from the South should go to the North.
“The NEC approved the recommendation and questions were raised at the NEC meeting that if that happens then, what about the position of the party when it comes to the presidential election, who will carry the flag of the party and it was concluded after much discussion, the party came out frankly to tell the press that regardless of where the chairman of the party may come from it does not preclude the participation of any member that may come from that same zone.
“I will quickly remind all members particularly those of us who happen to fall within a rank and within the leadership position.
“Every zone, including the South, West and North, there is no zone that in not capable of producing eminent official, eminent personalities, eminent Nigerians who will lead Nigeria successfully more than we have now
“Every Nigerian who is a member of PDP must always be aware of the position of my party.
“PDP does not stop anybody from contesting for presidency.”
