Over 36 residents of Yelwa Zangam community, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State have reportedly been killed in the early hours of Wednesday.
A resident of the community who pleaded anonymity told PlatinumPost that the armed bandits burnt the entire family of the district head, then shot dead 17 people.
The source revealed that the attackers had a day earlier disabled the bridge leading to the community, so as to prevent any access to help before launching their assault.
PlatinumPost learnt that a prior crisis in Yelwa about 2weeks ago resulted in the killings in the community.
The source narrated to our correspondent saying: “There was a crisis in Yelwa about 2weeks ago as a result of misunderstanding in regards to a burial ground (cemetery) there. The land the Hausa people bury their corpse belongs to a native of the place, an Anaguta man, who rented the place to them.
“He told them to stop using the place for burial because he had sold the remaining part of the land, however, the Hausa people went and planted cactus on the land and even encroached on someone else’s land. When the native youths of the place noticed, they raised an alarm which almost resulted in some violence. Thank God for the intervention of the security men who helped to calm the situation.”
He added that the district head and parties involved had a meeting and everything was resolved. However, “the Hausa boys of Yelwa then attacked 4 people the next day who were rushed to the hospital
“The paramount ruler then called for a peace meeting between the Hausa, Fulani and the Anagutas as a result of the attack. The meeting went well not until the recent attack, Tuesday 24th of August.
“The Anaguta youth leader and the Anaguta District Head gave good intel on the perpetrators of the previous attacks because it seemed the Hausa community were hiding them.
“So this recent attack affected them, both of their houses were burnt alongside the house of the son of the District Head. 16 people were burnt alive in the District’s head house and 17 people were shot to death.”
He noted that the corpses of people shot to death were moved to plateau specialist hospital but the burnt ones were still in the house.
The source told our correspondent that 3 suspects have so far been arrested.
