A civil society organisation, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has blamed the social menaces and other security challenges bedeviling the country on the disrespect of the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The organisation expressed sadness that majority of the commentators and political leaders who have the influence to redirect the steps of the President are not doing so due to their selfish pursuit of presidential favours, contracts, among others.
A statement issued by HURIWA and obtained by PlatinumPost on Sunday in Abuja, said as long as those who ought to speak honestly are not willing to do so due to fear of possible loss of unmerited favours and privileges, the errors of the President will continue.
The statement signed by the National Coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf, expressed anxiety that the negative consequences of the monumental missteps will take the nation over six decades to correct.
The rights group carpeted the National Assembly leadership headed by the “Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila both of whom alongside many other members of the ruling cabal in the Parliament are much more vigorously pursuing partisan agenda of the All Progressive Congress that are at variance with the global best practices.”
“The Senate President most times speaks and behaves more like a junior aide of President Muhammadu Buhari than the leader of the National Assembly who should ensure that his members and mates in the National Assembly deliver the most qualitative supervisory and effective oversight functions to compel adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law by the executive arm of government and particularly by the President and the cabinet and agencies of the national government.
“The recent argument by the President of the Senate that those who says Nigeria is failing are unpatriotic shows that the Chairman of the National legislature lacks what it takes to lead to the emergence of an independent National Assembly that will carry out all her works with the wellbeing and welfare of the citizens and the nation at heart. This sort of blind support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s misrule of the nation by the Senate President is the reason Nigeria is about to collapse,” parts of the statement read.
HURIWA singled out Buhari disrespect for constitution especially in adhering to principles of federal character in appointment to strategic national security offices and positions, as the direct causes of the increasing insecurity and breakdown of law and order all around Nigeria.
The rights group asked President Muhammadu Buhari to amend his ways within the remaining two years unless his main agenda is to destroy Nigeria beyond repairs in 2023.
