Delta State Government on Friday declared war on illegal tax collectors with the inauguration of two revenue taskforce members, warning that any taskman involved in illegitimate tax activities in the streets, highways or offices to stand down or risk jail terms.
The warnings came on the heels of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s approval for the constitution of taskforce which were inaugurated by the Chairman, Delta State Internal Revenue Service, Monday Onyeme in Asaba on Friday.
While inuagurating the state Taskforce on road taxes, Onyeme said that the development became necessary to checkmate irregularities by motorists, reduce incidences of insecurities on the roads and boost the financial fortunes of the state, adding that the constitution of the state Committee on Haulage became imperative to check mate activities of illegal tax collectors who continually harrass Deltans saying that the intention of the state government was to stop the duplication of taxes or levies on the citizens.
He said: “The Delta State Internal Revenue Service Law that came into force in May 2020 consolidated all taxes and levies and brought them under the umbrella of the state Internal Revenue Service.
“This means that the duty of collecting taxes and levies in the state is vested on Delta State Internal Revenue Service and nobody else.if any agency because of their Technical capacity is assigned to collect these taxes or levies they are doing so on behalf of the Delta State Government and Internal Revenue Service.”
He expressed worry that the activities of illegal tax collectors were not only depleting the Internally Generated Revenue Service ( IGR) of the state government but had also become serious embarrassment to the Government even as he charged members of the taskforce to be good ambassadors in the cause of discharging their duties.
