A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has fined Kano State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, one million naira for human right violation.
The fine was as a result of an illegal detention of one Bashir Galadanci, a social media commentator, over alleged defamation post against the PPRO on social media.
Galadanci was arrested last year following a series of Facebook posts said to be prasing the former PPRO, Abdullahi Majiya, while at the same time defaming the present spokesman, Kiyawa, a deputy superintendent of police.
In his verdict, Justice Obiora fined DSP Kiyawa one million Naira fine for detaining Bashir for more than 48 hours, which is a violation of his right.
The court also said Bashir has a freedom of expression as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
The court said Bashir should not be arrested or invited to the police again for the same case forever and asked Kiyawa to tender apology for his action on radio station for violating his right.
In his interview, Bashir narrated how the Police detained him, beat him up and forced him to lie against former PPRO.
“I have a good relationship with Majiya so I always post his achievements or anything directly related to him because our relationship is personal not because he is a police officer but he is like brother and a friend to me.
