A man, Tunde Alabe was allegedly killed when hoodlums suspected to be smugglers attacked customs men and other security agents in the Oja Odan area of Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officers of Ogun 1 Customs Command, Mr. Hammed Oloyede, said the incident happened on February 10, 2021, when the Joint Border Drill operatives stationed at Olajogun in Oja-Odan area of Ilaro intercepted several kegs of 25 litres of petrol being smuggled out of Nigeria.
The statement said: ‘’In an attempt to seize the said petroleum products obviously in contravention with schedule six of Common External Tariff, some smugglers armed with assorted dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, guns, and charms unleashed deadly attack against lawful officers leading to a crossfire.
‘’In the ensuing exchange of fire between smugglers and the patrol team, one Tunde Alabe (male), a native of Ohunbe community also involved in the attack sustained a gun injury leading to his untimely death.”
The incident, according to Oloyede led to the blockage of Oja-Odan/Obelle road by smugglers, who also razed customs’ checkpoints and operational bases of other sister security agencies in Olajogun, Hanger, and Ohunbe areas.
He added: ‘’Properties and items destroyed by the smugglers include: two customs patrol Toyota Hilux vans; one patrol Toyota Hilux van belonging to Nigeria Immigration Service; one Mercedes Benz Sport Utility Vehicle; one Peugeot 206 car; four motorcycles belonging to Nigeria Immigration Service; original credentials and other documents belonging to two customs personnel; two buildings and many other patrol points.’’
