Biafrans stand with Kukah says IPOB leader

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has warned individuals calling for the eviction of Bishop Hassan Kukah from Sokoto not to carry out their theat.

The firebrand IPOB leader, said the people of South-East Nigeria will stand by the Catholic Bishop, saying that the country did not belong to any particular group.

“Let me say this: #Biafrans stand with Bishop Matthew Kukah.

“You damned TERRORISTS should keep off him. You don’t own #Sokoto. You don’t own #Nigeria,” Kanu tweeted late on Thursday.

PlatinumPost reports that Kukah has come under strong criticisms in some quarters following his 2020 Christmas message that berated the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

In the message titled: “A Nation in search of vindication”, he highlighted some challenges facing the country and how the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has not lived up to expectations.

He also said if Buhari was a non-Muslim northerner there could have been a change of government.

The sermon promoted several reactions with an Islamic group, Muslim Solidarity Forum, calling for the Bishop to apologise to Muslims for painting Islam in bad light or quit Sokoto State.

On Wednesday the Presidency, in a statement titled : ‘Father Kukah must be allowed to practise his faith and politics,’ called on those threatening the Kaduna State-born priest to allow him to his conscience as under “our laws, groups or factions must not give quit notices, neither should they unilaterally sanction any perceived breaches.”

The statement signed by Garba Shehu, spokesman to the President, however, said “Father Kukah has greatly offended many with his controversial remarks against the government and the person of the President, with some even accusing him of voicing anti-Islamic rhetoric.”
