No more negotiation with bandits says Niger gov

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of entering into any form of negotiation with the bandits terrorising the state.

Governor Bello spoke while fielding questions from State House reporters after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on the rising insecurity and infrastructural decay in the state.

The governor said he stopped the option of negotiation with the criminals because they don’t keep to any agreement adding that he had once reluctantly negotiated with the bandits which ended without producing any positive result.

Bello, who said the State was experiencing influx of bandits who enter into the state through the Benin Republic border, added that “the bandits are Fulanis that have no one to control them even their parents.”

He said that the menace of bandits in the state had become a source of worry to the government.

The governor, while saying that the local security had been helpful in curtailing the activities of the criminals, revealed that the bandits were being invited by some locals.

“We are going to be ruthless with village heads found wanting in this regard. We arrested bandits from Sudan and Mali and they were recruited through social media,” he said.

He added that the bandits come to the state through the neighbouring Kaduna and Katsina states.

Armed bandits have also launched a fresh attack on Chukuba in Shiroro local government area of Niger state killing a police man injured, another person and rustled herds of cattle.

An eye witness and indigene of the area who pleaded anonymity, said during a telephone interview in Minna that the incident which occurred on Wednesday left many villagers confused.

The Chairman of the local government, Comrade Suleiman Dauda Chukuba also confirmed the incident to newsmen in a telephone interview.

He however appealed to both the Niger state and Federal Government to come to their aid and save the people of Shiroro local government council from persistent bandits attack.

Similar attack also took place on Wednesday in Rafi Local Government Council where the armed bandits in their large number strike and abducted five persons at Rigo village.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, Niger State Command, ASP Wasiu Abiodun said he will get back to our correspondent but could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.

But Niger state Governor Alh Abubakar Sani Bello had during a visit to Bobi Grazing Reserve on Monday at Mariga assured Nigerlites of his administration readiness to flush out all bandits operating in parts of the state.
