2023 Oyegun Ebri back zoning of Presidency to South

Former National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress ( APC), John Oyegun, has weighed in on the debate regarding zoning of the party’s presidential ticket in 2023.

He said there is no dispute regarding the subject as it is unversally agreed that the next president must come from the South.

Oyegun, who spoke to our correspondent at the weekend, however, said there is no micro zoning of the ticket among the geopolitical zones in the South.

“Any attempt to alter the zoning formula in a very diverse country as Nigeria, could have disastrous consequences. Zoning is imperative in a multi-cultural multi-religious and ethnically diverse country such as ours,” he said.

According to the Governor of Edo State, zoning gives a sense of belonging to the various interests that came together to form a united Nigeria.

“This sense of belonging through zoning is the only glue that can hold this country together and any attempt to override it by any section of the country could lead to disastrous consequences and even the make up of political parties in the country clearly defines the inevitability of that phenomenon,” he posited.

Oyegun further said that the three geopolitical zones in the south have an equal rights to aspire for the presidential ticket of the APC, saying that the presidency was never awarded but have to be deserved.

Also, former Governor of Cross Rivers and APC chieftain, Mr Clement Ebri said that any attempt to change the zoning arrangements might spell doom for the Nigerian people.

“We will witness the best in democracy if the zoning arrangements is sustained, rather than trying to change the whole things to worsen the present situation in Nigeria,” he said.
