 World AIDS Day Prevalence rate of HIV infection drops to 0 5 in Kano Official

The prevalence rate of HIV infection has dropped from 25 percent to 0.5% in Kano state, according to Sabitu Y. Shanono, Director-General, Kano state Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA).

The DG disclosed this at a workshop for journalists, as part of World AIDS Day commemoration, held at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano.

Shanono also revealed that there are over 35,000 registered HIV patients currently receiving treatment in the state.

He also stated that the agency is looking for more patients by ensuring that test is free, adding that those that their results show they are positive are also placed on drugs.

The DG explained that “The essence of organizing this workshop is very clear. The role of media is indispensable towards the fight against AIDS. In this year’s celeberation we have achieved a lot and media has contributed a lot to the achievement.

“We feel that media has a great role to play in HIV response. That is why we decided to organize this workshop to reequip the the journalists in their reportage of HIV and see how we can improve on the information we give out to the community.

The kind of information that we disseminate and how effective it’s to change the behavior of the people,” he said.

“Prevalence rate of HIV has dropped from 2.5% to 0.5% in Kano state. Over 35,000 currently on treatment and we are still looking for more by ensuring that test is free and those that results show they are positive are also placed on drugs,” the DG added.

Earlier in a remark, the state Commissioner for Information, Malam Mohammed Garba, reaffirmed the commitment of the government in improving and providing the necessary facilities needed by HIV patients and general public.

Garba said that the state government was fully committed to ensure total eradication of HIV/AIDS, pointing out that the seminar was timely as journalists play a vital role in the development of every society.
