Twenty nine widows of deceased Police officers received N40.6m amidst tears as benefits of the fallen heroes, their husbands.
The cheques were distributed by Assistant Inspector General (IGP) of Police, zone one headquarters, Sadiq Bello in Kano state, yesterday.
In a remark after distributing the cheques, AIG Sadiq Bello said the gesture was part of the deceased officers entitlements, assuring that the remaining benefits would be distributed to them when the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu Abubakar approves.
According to him, the IGP is very much concerned about the welfare of Police personnel.
“the IGP would go to extra-mile to ensure that whatever is due to Police personnel whether serving, retired or even deceased, they get it or their families get it as a matter of right”
The beneficiaries were drawn from Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states.
Asma’u Mustapha, a widow to late Mustapha from Katsina state, said her husband died about three years ago and left her with children.
She thanked the IGP for the kind gesture which according to her, would help her to take care of her orphans, especially in the area of education and health.
Another benficiary, Tortyom Mbakaren Theresa, who collected a cheque of over one million naira, expressed happiness for getting the money.
She said although she applied, she did not expect the money, but suddenly received a call to come and collect her cheque.
“I am a happy person today. I was always thinking on how to take care of my three orphans, but now the IGP has provided succour to us.
” I am very happy and pledge to use the money judiciously to help rise my kids,” she said.
AIG Bello urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the money provided towards the education and general welfare of the children left behind.
He also stressed that the amount was given just to ameliorate the pains and suffering of the bereaved families but not to replace the lost of the deceased ones.
“it is a well known fact that, the grief of losing a loved one can never be quantified.
“Finally, on behalf of the IGP, Mohammed A. Adamu, NPF, mni, i pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased officers and may Almighty God grant their respective families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. I wish you safe journey back to your respective destinations,” said the IGP”.
