Opposition parties reject Jigawa Local Govt election, say is a sham

By Onome Williams

The just concluded local government elections held in Jigawa state has been discribed as fraudulent and undemocratic by the leadership of the state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social democratic party (SDP).

Reacting to just concluded local government elections,  Alhaji Aminu Jahun, the state  PDP vice chairman, said  the PDP have rejected the outcome of the election held last Saturday because there was no election held anywhere in Jigawa.

Jahun alleged that the Jigawa state Independent Electoral commission ( JSIEC) refused to sell forms to his party members who made several effort to obtained the forms, adding that the election was the worse the exercise ever witness in the state.

His words: “the Jigawa state Independent Electoral refused to sell nomination forms to our members, so why should we participate in a stage managed elections, which did not even hold.

“Anyway, we  are going to challenge the elections in the state election tribunal, compelling JSIEC to prove to the world that election was held”.

Also reacting to the election,  the Jigawa state woman leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Hajiya Balaraba Abdullah, said the election was a kangaroo election.

Hajiya Balaraba said JSIEC delebrately put the prices of both chairmanship and councillors forms expensive.

She said, “how do the JSIEC chairman expect  a chairmanship candidate to buy a nomination form at N500,000.00  and. Councillors to buy nomination form at N200,000.00 naira in this hard time. He knows that only those in power can afford to buy the forms.

“So our members could not afford to purchase the nomination forms because of the price. That is why all the former APC chairman and councillors picked the nomination forms except those who have served three terms”.

Hajiya Balaraba argued that despite all the plan to rig the elections, the entire election was cosmetic, it was an APC affair.

She added, “I personally moved around the state capital last Saturday, people were busy with thier normal activities. And from the report I received from across the state, people shunned the elections.

“It is shameful that JSIEC chairman is claiming that it was a free and fair elections. No security presence in polling units, they are mostly empty as people did not come out to vote”.

Platinum Post observed that most polling units were empty during the election and only boxes were seen with JSIEC staff and party agent.

However, in Yargaba polling units, there were APC and Accord  Party agents.

The State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umat Namadi was said to have cast his votes ‪at about 9 am‬ in kafinhausa local government ‪saturday morning‬ and left almost immediately to Kano state to attend a wedding.

Earlier, on the eve of the election,  the spokesman of JSIEC, Alhaji Habibu Yerima disclosed  that 16 political parties purchased forms and will participate in the election.

Meanwhile, Yerima on Sunday declared the election as free and fair.

Reacting, Habibu Yerima, the spokesman of Jigawa State Electoral Commission, admitted that the PDP and SDP did not participate in the election, saying the parties boycotted the poll for reasons none to them.

He also denied the report that the electoral commission refused to sell nomination forms to the candidates of the two political parties.

“When the time table of the election was out, the representatives of the PDP and SDP were there and we’re served with a copy. But they decided to boycott the election.

” I want say without mincing words that no political party was denied purchase of a nomination form. It is just an allegation.”
