Plateau state Governor Simon Lalong on Tuesday in Shendam flagged off the sale of fertilizer for the 2019 cropping season.
Lalong said that a 50kg bag of NPK 15:15 would be sold at N6800, 50kg bag of NPK 20:10 is N5500, 50kg bag of Urea is N5500 and Organic fertilizer N4500.
The governor acknowledged the enormous problems associated with the distribution of subsidized fertilizer, but assured farmers that the government would address the challenges.
He assured farmers that his administration would ensure that agriculture became the driver of the economy in the state.
According to Lalong, the state can achieve the objectives of its agricultural revolution by providing critical farming inputs like fertilizer.
He added that government would ensure provision of relevant agricultural facilities, value chains as well as create a regulatory enabling environment for the sector to thrive.
Mr Hosea Finangwai, the state’s Commissioner for Agricultural and Rural Development, said that the subsidized fertilizer were targeted at small holder peasant farmers, who could not afford to buy the product in the open market.
Finangwai urged farmers to be vigilant enough to ensure that the well-thought out strategy formulated in their favour worked well in their areas.
The Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Gyang Buba, expressed appreciation to Lalong for the timely flag-off of the fertiliser sale.
Buba urged the governor to work toward tackling the security challenges in the state to enable farmers to go to their farms without fear.
“We will work with you to address the challenges as security is everybody’s business,” he said.
Chairman of Shendam Local government Council, Mr Alex Naantuam, thanked the governor for choosing agriculture as a tool for poverty reduction in the state (NAN)
